Winning Big On and Off the Field: How NZF Learn is Transforming Kiwi Football
When our national teams excel on the world stage, it shines a massive spotlight on the incredible foundation underneath, our grassroots sports community. Behind every epic volley, tactical masterclass, and clean sheet is a network of dedicated volunteers working tirelessly to elevate the game.
Did you know that New Zealand Football partnered with Epic Learning to transform their training into an on-demand, digital platform called NZFLearn?
It gives coaches and referees across the country instant access to high-quality, skills-based education on any device, making volunteer training easier and more inclusive than ever before. Â
In fact, our collaborative mahi took home a major trophy of its own: The NZATD Best Skills-based Learning Project 2024!
The Core Mission: Supporting Every Coach and Referee
Historically, delivering consistent education to a nationwide network of volunteer coaches and referees was a massive logistical challenge. Traditional in-person training sessions were frequently restricted by geography, scheduling conflicts, and time constraints.
To break down these barriers, NZF partnered with Epic Learning to build NZFLearn: a scalable, digital learning platform designed to provide high-quality, skills-based education on demand, from any device.
Through rigorous collaboration with regional federations and specialist working groups, we streamlined 11 complex traditional training paths into 5 core community-focused e-learning pathways:
- Gameday Leaders (4–9 years): Focusing on safety, basic rules, and fostering fun.
- Junior Level Coaches (10–13 years): Shifting mindsets from strict perfectionism to player engagement.
- Youth Level Coaches (14–19 years): Introducing tactical basics, growth mindsets, and injury prevention.
- Mini Football/Futsal Referee Award
- Youth and Community Football/Futsal Referee Award
Whether it is a parent stepping up to coach “First Kicks” on a Saturday morning, or a prospective official launching a paid refereeing career, the platform supports every single community coach and referee across the country.
Elevating the Women’s Game
A core priority of this project was ensuring that diversity and inclusion weren’t just buzzwords, but lived experiences on the field. We are incredibly proud of the impact this digital transformation is having on women’s football.
Working closely with key advocates and integrating frameworks for the Talent Development Programme (TDP), the platform actively helps elevate the women’s game from the ground up. This includes specialised, bite-sized modules like the MILO Fantails program, curated explicitly to attract and retain young female players aged 4–12 by building their confidence in a supportive environment.

We knew the solution was innovative, but the real-world results since the March 2024 launch have been nothing short of staggering:

A Monumental Shift: The digital modules proved to be so engaging and thorough that they completely negated the need for face-to-face theory sessions. Regional federations report that volunteers now arrive at physical workshops far better prepared, showcasing significantly higher baseline confidence and competence.
Who Knew Learning Nerds Could Score Goals?
It turns out that when you combine deep subject-matter expertise with intentional instructional design, you get a winning formula. By curating a mountain of information into interactive, 10-to-15-minute bite-sized modules filled with real-world scenarios, knowledge checks, and video demonstrations, we made upskilling a joy rather than a chore for our amazing, time-poor volunteers.
