15-Minute Wonders: Enhancing Remote Teams Through Micro-Learning

30 or so post-it notes of various colours and sizes have been added together. Each note holds an idea that someone has learned: "I have used to learn Light Burn software. "How to make summer rolls and more Thai food." I modified a Nerf gun with a screwdriver and hot glue to make it shoot harder." Some notes have smaller notes containing reactions like "Woah."

The challenge of remote work

Picture a virtual workspace where ideas flow, creativity thrives, and team bonds strengthen—all in 15-minute bursts. A pipe dream, right? For our remote team of designers, developers and visionaries, it’s become our weekly reality.

The remote work tightrope

Remote work promises flexibility, but it often delivers a balancing act. For our eclectic crew of creative professionals, we face two particular challenges:

  • Creating connections: With team members sprinkled across Aotearoa and abroad like stars in a constellation, it can take time to find space for remote team collaboration.
  • The learning squeeze: Despite our collective treasure trove of expertise, carving out time for continuous learning has been elusive.

Our eureka moment: 15-minute micro-learning sessions

We had a think and wondered, “What if like in exercise for the body, the answer was not in marathon learning sessions but in small repeated steps?”

Our solution? Weekly micro-learning sessions that pack a punch:
Here’s the lowdown:

  • Time: A snappy 15 minutes of content, with a 5-minute chaser for reflection.
  • Rhythm: Once a week, like clockwork.
  • The maestro: A rotating cast, with a different team member volunteering to take the spotlight each week.
  • The subject matter: The world is our oyster – from work-related pearls to personal passions.
These compact learning adventures have become the unexpected stars of our work week, igniting creativity and weaving connections in surprising ways. They have helped us with our virtual team building and have been great online learning for us as remote workers.

How it works: The mechanics of our sessions

A simple, effective structure:

  • 15 minutes for content presentation
  • 5 minutes for reflection and discussion
  • A concise WIN form for feedback for the presenter (What went well and what could be improved for the presenter and the next steps for the learner)
This concise timeframe keeps the sessions focused and respects everyone's busy schedules. It's surprising how much can be shared and absorbed in just 20 minutes.

Guidelines for success

For presenters:

  • Focus on one key concept
  • Encourage interaction
  • Stick to the time limit

For participants:

  • Be prompt and engaged
  • Share key takeaways

A diverse range of topics

The strength of our sessions lies in their variety. We’ve explored both professional skills and personal interests. Some popular sessions include:

  • “A picture is worth a thousand words: Harnessing visual communication”
  • “Effective meeting culture: Transforming gatherings into productivity powerhouses”
  • “Hex codes decoded: How the heck does #F1E2D3 make a light beige on my computer?”
  • “Loglines for instructional design: Distilling your course essence in two sentences”
  • “Mastering the art of Kiwi custard squares: A sweet journey through Aotearoa’s favourite treat”
  • “Radical candor: Balancing honesty and empathy in feedback”
  • “Spanish verb conjugation: A quick dive into romance language structure”

This eclectic mix of topics broadens our perspectives and offers insights into our colleagues’ expertise and passions.

There are four panels with the title “Our 15 Minute Micro Sessions.” Panel 1 Has white text on a blue background reading “Effective Meeting Culture” Panel 2 is full of brightly coloured post-it notes leaving comments and examples of “Ruinous empathy, Manipulative insecurity, Obnoxious Aggression and Radical candor. Panel 3 has a blue text on a white background. The ask path starts with Strangers, Prospects, customers, clients, and advocates and ends with collaborators. Panel 4 is a view of Earth from the moon and the caption “A picture is worth more than a thousand words.”

The recipe for micro-learning magic: Key ingredients

Our 15-minute sessions thrive on simplicity and focus. We’ve identified four essential elements that make these brief encounters both engaging and effective:

  • One clear outcome: Each session aims for a single, achievable learning goal. This laser focus ensures participants walk away with a specific takeaway.
  • One central concept: We zero in on a single idea or skill, allowing for depth despite the time constraint. This approach prevents information overload and promotes retention.
  • One engaging hook: We call this our “Epic Factor” – a compelling angle that captures attention and sparks curiosity. It might be a surprising fact, a provocative question, or a real-world application.
  • Group-led learning: While one person facilitates, everyone participates. We encourage questions, discussions, and sharing of experiences, making each session a collaborative learning adventure.

By sticking to these four principles, we’ve turned brief encounters into powerful learning moments that boost our remote work productivity.

The four key ingredients of successful micro-learning sessions

What we have learnt

Beyond learning: The ripple effect on our team

Our micro-learning initiative has sparked changes that extend far beyond the 15-minute sessions themselves:

  • Sharper communication: Regularly distilling complex ideas into bite-sized presentations has honed our ability to convey information clearly and succinctly across all aspects of our work.
  • Creativity boost: Exposure to diverse topics and thinking styles has ignited fresh perspectives and innovative approaches in our projects.
  • Tighter team bonds: These shared learning experiences have created common ground, fostering connections that transcend job roles and time zones.
  • Ongoing skill growth: The variety of topics covered has equipped team members with a broad range of knowledge and skills, contributing to our collective expertise.

Wrapping up: Small sessions, big impact

In essence, our 15-minute sessions have become catalysts for growth, connection, and innovation. They’ve shown us that impactful learning doesn’t always require extended workshops or formal training.

We don’t aim to create experts in less than 15 minutes. Instead, we want to ignite interest, exchange knowledge, and build connections that last beyond the session itself.

These brief learning moments, when consistently provided, accumulate into substantial knowledge and foster ongoing creativity within our team.

To companies grappling with remote work challenges, we say: don’t underestimate the impact of small, consistent learning opportunities. These brief sessions can transform team dynamics and drive innovation and have been essential in building our digital workplace culture.

  1. The Radical candor session was great. It’s pretty amazing how a 15-minute session can embed so quickly and just become part of our team culture. A strange by-product is that I find myself delivering radical candor to myself on walks. I’m not sure about that one.
